Personalised Gift Ideas for Every Milestone
The best personalised gifts mark a specific moment in a specific person's life. They carry a name, a date, or a phrase that means something only to the person receiving them. That specificity is what separates a personalised gift from a generic one, and it is why handmade plaques remain one of the most popular gift choices for life's milestones.
This page walks through the most common occasions we make plaques for, with ideas for wording and design that have worked well for other customers.
New baby and christening
A baby's arrival is the moment that generates the most personalised gift orders for us. The most popular formats:
- Birth announcement plaques. Baby's name, date of birth, weight, and time of birth. Some customers add a short quote or a verse. These are typically 20x15cm and hang on the nursery wall for years.
- Christening keepsakes. The child's name, date of christening, and the names of the godparents. Often includes a chosen scripture passage. These tend to be kept rather than displayed, brought out on milestone birthdays.
- Sibling plaques. "Big brother" or "big sister" plaques are popular gifts for an older child when a new baby arrives. A small gesture that makes the older child feel included.
Weddings
Wedding plaques account for roughly half our spring and summer orders. The most requested pieces:
- Welcome signs. "Welcome to the wedding of..." in the couple's chosen colours. Usually 60x40cm, displayed at the venue entrance.
- Date keepsakes. Smaller plaques with the couple's names and the wedding date. Often given as gifts to parents of the bride and groom.
- Table names and numbers. Matching the overall wedding palette. These can be reused as home decor after the wedding.
Anniversaries
Anniversary plaques are quiet, personal gifts. They work best when the wording is specific rather than generic. Instead of "Happy Anniversary," consider the date you married, the place you met, or a phrase that has meaning only to the two of you. A plaque that says "The Swan, 14 August 2006" will mean more than one that says "25 Years Together" because it calls back to a shared memory.
Retirement
Retirement plaques are often the most thoughtful pieces we make. The best ones reference something specific about the person's career or personality rather than just their name and leaving date. A teacher might receive a plaque with a favourite classroom saying. A firefighter might receive one with their station number and years of service. The personal detail is what makes it worth keeping.
Moving house
New-home plaques are a growing category. The two most popular styles:
- "Welcome to..." plaques with the family name, hung by the front door.
- House-name plaques with the property name (for houses that have one) or the street address, in a decorative style.
Housewarming gifts from friends often include a short blessing or a humorous motto. "This house runs on tea and goodwill" is a perennial favourite.
